What happens when I have surgery?

Before your breast enlargement surgery you will need to purchase a sports bra to take with you to the medical center - the size will be agreed with your Cosmetic Surgeon and yourself during your consultation. Some women may be required to undergo a mammogram. It is advisable to make any changes to your weight before your surgery as this will give you a longer-lasting result.

If you are a smoker, take aspirin or any other medication, your Cosmetic Surgeon will wish to discuss this with you at your consultation. Your Cosmetic Surgeon will advise you when you are to discontinue and resume these activities.

THE DAY OF YOUR BREAST ENLARGEMENT SURGERY

The Cosmetic Surgeon will visit you in your room to obtain a final consent and answer any last minute questions you may have. When you wake up from the anaesthetic you will have your dressings and sports bra in place. You will be offered pain relief should you require it, and there may be drainage tubes in place to collect any leakage of blood - these will be removed before you go home. You will need to stay in hospital overnight but will be free to go home the following morning.

You may be given antibiotics and painkillers to take. It is normal to experience discomfort following breast augmentation and you will be advised to rest when you get home to assist recovery. If you have young children you will need to arrange for someone to help you with them and also basic household chores for approximately one week. It is advisable to refrain from work for between one to two weeks, depending on your occupation; however, most people who have a desk based job will be fit for work after seven days. Your Cosmetic Surgeon will give you specific advice regarding returning to work, exercise etc.

Going home after your Breast Enlargement

It is necessary for you to refrain from bathing and showering until you have been seen at the clinic for your first wound check, at approximately 7-14 days. You will also be asked to sleep on your back for the first few weeks. It is very important that you attend the appointments that have been made for you to care for your wounds and see your Cosmetic Surgeon post-operatively. Please do not wear an underwired bra until you have discussed this with your Cosmetic Surgeon. Please arrange for someone to drive you home from the hospital.

You will have your own personal Nurse Counsellor both before and after your procedure to support you and answer any questions you may have.

RECOVERY FROM BREAST ENLARGEMENT SURGERY

Following breast enlargement surgery your surgeon will use standard or dissolvable stitches to close the incisions, dress the area thoroughly and cover this with a specialist sports bra. It is normal to feel sore and tender and for the area to be swollen and bruised, but all of these symptoms will ease after a few days and should disappear completely a few weeks after your operation. Your stitches will usually be removed seven days after your operation, but this is not necessary if you have had dissolvable stitches. You will be advised to wear a sports bra 24 hours a day for between eight and 12 weeks after your operation to ensure that your new breasts are completely supported during the recovery process.
